Outside an entrance to the Second Avenue subway station in Manhattan’s East Village, longtime street artist Doug Groupp has spray-painted an artwork portraying ICE officers detaining the Statue of Liberty. Groupp, who uses the moniker Clown Soldier, said that his work has not always been overtly political but that “recent events” pushed him to make it so. He added that he drew inspiration for this design from Keith Haring, who transformed the subway system into a canvas for chalk art calling attention to issues like the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Groupp plans to offer prints for sale through his Instagram (clown_soldier2021) with proceeds directed toward the New York Immigration Coalition’s Emergency Justice Fund. “Attack on Liberty” will remain on view through January.
