The mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, has said that police have recommended he be charged for allowing a Pride parade to take place in the city earlier this year amid Hungary’s government ban. Karácsony shared the news in a Facebook video posted on 11 December, Karacsony said: “They accuse me of violating the [new law on] freedom of assembly, which is completely absurd.” The recommendation follows Hungary’s March 2025 ruling that restricted freedom of assembly involving the public portrayal to children of “divergence from selfidentity corresponding to sex at birth, sex change or homosexuality”. Karácsony rejected an official order from the government to allow the Budapest Pride event to continue in June, with other politicians from the EU joining in a show of solidarity to the country’s LGBTQ+ people.
