Glow Wild and Monday's for the Birds, we got you covered here at Your Birmingham Zoo. š¦
Here's a amazing must read:
Meet Muerto, our ambassador Black Vulture! Black Vultures are native right here in Alabama, along with the Turkey Vulture. A great way to tell them apart as they soar in the sky above is by looking at the color of their wings! The undersides of a turkey vultureās wings are entirely white feathers, but Muerto is showing off the way that black vultures have black wing feathers except for the five white feathers at the tips of their wings.
Vultures provide the incredibly important job of keeping our ecosystem clean. They love to eat meat left behind by other animals, called carrion. This is an important step in the decomposition process that allows new plants and animals to grow!
Next time you see a vulture, say thank you! And stop by the Ambassador Animal Demonstrations around the zoo at 11:15am and 2:15pm each day for a chance to meet Muerto himself!
