š The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has seen asteroids colliding at a nearby star for the first time! āļøā
ā
š“ At just 25 light-years from Earth, Fomalhaut is one of the brightest stars in the night sky. In 2008, scientists discovered a possible planet around Fomalhaut ā but it appears to be a dust cloud masquerading as a planet: the result of colliding planetesimals.ā
ā
š“ While checking in on the system, scientists were surprised to find a second point of light had suddenly appeared at a similar location around the star. Hubble had just witnessed a violent collision between two massive objects!ā
ā
š“ The Fomalhaut system appears to be in a dynamical upheaval, similar to what our solar system experienced in its first few hundred million years after formation. Hubble and esawebb will help the scientists investigate further, seeing how the cloud develops and examining the composition of its dust.ā
