How to structure a basketball workout that actually translates to games:
Prior to live game reps, allow players to see this progression!
Step 1: Introduce The Concept: Allow players to get comfortable with the concept without defense
Step 2: Add Guided Defense: Apply a predictable amount of pressure to give the player the opportunity to perform the concept vs game-like action
Step 3: Give Counter Options: Introduce multiple options that the player can choose from based on how the defense is guarding.
Step 4: Live Play: Allow the player to make these decisions in a game-like scenario
Many times, players either…
1: do everything against air and never see a defender
Or
2: they get thrown straight into live reps and never really learn how to execute the concept.
This progression gives players a chance to learn, rep, and react before finally being asked to perform in a real game scenario!
