Losing access to a library can be just as damaging as outright censorship.
Because of the Trump administration's decision to cut federal funding β coupled with limited state resources β the Washington State Library in Tumwater and the Washington Talking Book and Braille Library in Seattle were forced to pull back on services and close to public visits in July.
These libraries are still running but visits are by appointment only, it is harder to get librarian help, and The Talking Book and Braille Library had to cancel multiple workshops. This means Washingtonians are losing out on access to critical materials, tools, and resources.
While a new state law that directs money from court filings toward library services could help with the funding shortfall β it will take time. Reinstating federal funds could fill that gap and make a difference sooner.
