The crossover turn is one of the fastest turns in swimming, but also one of the trickiest to learn. So I broke it down into 3 simple drills that build on each other:
âś… Step 1: The Approach
Focus on the timing of your wall touch and lay fully on your side. This drill helps you feel how your opposite hand reaches for the wall and sets up your body alignment.
âś… Step 2: Half Crossover + Flip
Turn fully onto your stomach and use a regular flip turn. It combines the crossover feel with a movement you’re already comfortable with—perfect for building confidence and control.
âś… Step 3: Full Crossover with Pause
Do the full turn, but pause once your feet hit the wall. Move slowly and precisely—this helps you lock in the feeling of correct foot placement and clean push-offs.
