REEL HISTORY: Did you know medieval Europe learnt astronomy through a man from Balkh, in what is now Afghanistan? Before the great Arabic-to-Latin translations, much of Europe’s star knowledge was limited to calendars, church timekeeping, and inherited Roman diagrams. Then Abū Maʿshar al-Balkhī, known in Latin as Albumasar, arrived on the syllabus.
