The Maiden Voyage
From a simple 30 mile sail from Shilshole to Port Townsend, I could tell immediately that Phoenix do Mar is an artist and the ocean is her canvas.
In only about 6-8 knots of wind, she carried her 27,000 pound hull at an average of four knots with ease. She feels stable, balanced, and calm. I’m very excited for the day I get to see her work in heavy weather.
I also had the honor of finally meeting my mentor and coach in person, the sailing legend Jerome Rand. He flew out from Michigan to join me for the maiden voyage. Over the next year he will work closely with me as I continue to build the skills required to prepare for a solo nonstop circumnavigation. I’m incredibly grateful for his guidance and the depth of knowledge he brings.
I’ll be spending the next several months continuing the refit here in Port Townsend. I came here because this place has deep maritime DNA. This is where serious sailors have come to learn, prepare, and pass down hard earned knowledge. Y...
