Zion (zi-yen) D. James is set to graduate this spring with double majors in Sociology and African/African Diaspora Studies. As a Black student, he explains that he’s found great meaning in his time on the Forty Acres by “Continuing the legacy and work of the amazing giants who came before me.” Those giants? Individuals like Heman Sweatt, Gwen Jones, Leon Holland, Cloteal Haynes, Eddie Reeves, Brenda Burt and Brianna McBride; who have all either paved the way or continued fighting for a more inclusive, just and progressive community at UT Austin and beyond. When asked what community has meant to him as a Longhorn, Zion explained that the Black UT Austin community has continuously guided him and helped mold him into the person he is today. “I owe the greatest gratitude to Black UT and will forever cherish the gems and experiences that have been poured into me,” he says.
