U+FFFD: Typographical research about the .notdef glyph š¤ā
ā
Also known as the not defined glyph, or in unicode U+FFFD, it serves as a placeholder for missing characters in incomplete typefaces, making it clear when a character is not present in a font file. U+FFFD takes this into account and questions the gap in typefaces. ā
ā
From up to 500 typefaces, 87 unique approaches are shown in the book. Ultimately, to what extent does U+FFFD symbolize linguistic gaps? Who creates them and who uses them as an opportunity to be filled?ā
ā
The project was developed by bauhaus.typography (the typography department of Bauhaus-UniversitƤt Weimar) under the supervision of M.f.A. Charlotte Rohde. The typeface used is CoFo Sans Mono, designed and kindly provided by Maria Doreuli (Contrast Foundry) and Krista Radoeva. ā
