Bryggen, shown here, was of great importance in the Hanseatic League’s trading empire from the 14th to the mid -16th century. Many fires have ravaged the complex, but around 62 buildings remain. The last 🔥 was in 1955, but because rebuilding has followed old medieval patterns and methods, it’s now a great example of the ancient wooden urban structures once common in northern Europe.
