Pieper Lewis, a Des Moines teen who received probation in the stabbing death of a man to whom she was sex trafficked at age 15 says she walked away from a women's transitional center in November because she felt unsafe. She said she felt overwhelmed and endangered, cut off from her job and therapy while quarantined with roommates who had COVID-19. She also said she was struggling in a facility filled with people stuck in a criminal lifestyle, including drug use, that she was trying to leave behind.
