In 1990, Nissan spent $2 million on a TV ad that aired once. ㅤ Then it got banned. ㅤ The spot was called The Dream, and it was directed by Ridley Scott, the same filmmaker behind Blade Runner and Alien. ㅤ Visually, it was way ahead of its time. ㅤ It was surreal, cinematic, and unforgettable. ㅤ People loved it. ㅤ Regulators didn’t. ㅤ Public safety groups accused Nissan of glorifying speed. Things escalated when they noticed the ad didn’t include a “professional driver on a closed course” disclaimer. ㅤ Organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety started calling for it to be pulled. ㅤ Nissan tried to argue that the entire thing was clearly a dream sequence. ㅤ Didn’t matter; they caved and pulled the ad almost immediately. ㅤ All that being said, that didn’t make it a failure. ㅤ Jalopnik and Road & Track later ranked it as one of the greatest car ads of all time.
