When Pieper Lewis goes before a judge this week for a decision about where she'll spend the next several years ― locked up in prison or transitioning to freedom ― one issue is likely to be where she's spent the three years since she stabbed to death a man she said had raped her repeatedly.
Her friends and some Iowa advocates for sex-trafficking victims aren't optimistic about her chances of again avoiding incarceration. And they say the state of Iowa set her up for that outcome by failing to provide an alternative to handling her case in an adult justice system that was unequipped to deal appropriately with a traumatized teen girl.
