Are gimbals overrated?
Gimbals get a lot of criticism in sports videography, but when they’re used with intention, they’re one of the best tools for pregame storytelling.
I use a gimbal in live basketball games to capture:
• Player walkouts
• Crowd energy
• Arena atmosphere
• The moments before tip-off
That movement helps set the scene and adds context before the action starts. For me, gimbals work best in pregame, not during live play.
The 360 BTS angle shows the full setup in real time, then the final clip shows how it translates on screen.
Used correctly, a gimbal isn’t overrated — it’s a storytelling tool for sports content creators.
Do you think gimbals are overrated in sports — or do you use them too?
