A quick story about meeting the captain... . . . One of my first credentialed assignments as a writer (that's how EVERYTHING started with my media career) with 2nd City Hockey (thanks @brandonmcain) was the CPHL over summer and we had access to interview Toews in the locker room after a game. Being a new "journalist" I kept to myself & stayed near the back of the scrum as beat reporters led the interview and questioning. I diligently took notes and noticed the "awe" and energy around 19's charisma and professionalism. After the interview was finished and the other journalists left, Toews makes eye contact with me and gestures me over to his stall... "Those scrums can be kinda crazy. Did you need anything, bud?" We chatted for another 10ish minutes on and off the record about the previous season's cup run, his off-season prep, life, hockey, and how careers can take all kinds of shapes and forms.
