Nine years ago today, Majd Kamalmaz was taken by the Assad regime.
He was a Syrian American psychotherapist who spent his life helping people recover from war and trauma. In February 2017, he traveled to Syria to visit family. Shortly after arriving in Damascus, he disappeared.
He never came home.
For seven years, his family searched for answers. In 2024, they were informed that he had died in captivity. His final resting place has never been found.
Nine years later, there is finally a chance for justice and accountability in Syria, for Majd and for the hundreds of thousands of others who remain missing.
We remember Majd. We remember all those who lost their lives in Syria. And we will continue to push for justice.
