Indiana's Noah Bontrager ran 3:59.48 at New Balance Indoor Nationals on Saturday to become just the 10th high school boy in history to break the 4-minute mile on an indoor track — and he did it in his first and only mile race of the entire indoor season. Bontrager, a junior at Westview High School in Indiana, entered the weekend as something of a wildcard. His mile credentials were limited — a 4:02 from last outdoor season — though he had run a strong 8:49 two-mile indoors. He wasn't racing any other events this weekend. This was his one shot. Bontrager went through 800m in 2:01.78 and closed the final 800m in a blistering 1:57.69 — a devastating negative split that won him the race and the record. The 3:59.48 puts Bontrager 7th on the all-time indoor sub-4 list for high school boys, behind legends like Drew Hunter, Hobbs Kessler, and Owen Powell.
