Documentary photographer @estherhorvath shared this photo for our ongoing #EyeOnClimate series—a campaign dedicated to raising awareness of climate change impacts and solutions around the @UnitedNations’ Annual Meeting on Climate Change, #COP23. . “I feel a strong connection to the Arctic and a responsibility to document the effects of climate change on our most fragile environment. Arctic ice regulates global climate, including the distribution of heat, and patterns of rainfall or snowfall. Extreme weather events, such as flooding, fires, storm surges, heat waves may be amplified by the loss of Arctic summer sea ice. . The Greenland ice sheet is up to 3 km thick and would raise sea levels by seven meters if it all melted into the ocean. Climate scientists suggest that there is a possibility of a sea level rise of one or two meters through the end of the century.
