On March 18th, a U.S. federal jury in Los Angeles convicted Samir Ousman Alsheikh, former head of Damascus Central Prison and a close associate of Bashar al-Assad, on multiple counts of torture and immigration fraud. It is the first time an Assad-era official has been tried and convicted in a U.S. federal court, and a historic milestone for Syrian accountability. This story was reported by Ashley Carnahan of foxnews, a journalist who has covered Syria with depth and seriousness throughout her career. We are grateful for her work and want to recognize her dedication to telling the real stories of Syria.
