John Shippen Jr. was a trailblazer in the sport of golf. Today we recognize Althea Gibson and everything she did to diversify and pave the way for black female athletes. 16 women are set to compete in the THE JOHN SHIPPEN National Invitational June 5 -7. We appreciate Ann for everything she has done for our Black Queens and are excited to watch them compete in couple of weeks! Althea Gibson started her career as a tennis player and was the first black woman to compete at the U.S. National Championships in 1950, and the first Black player to compete at Wimbledon in 1951. For a short time, too, Gibson turned to golf, making history again as the first Black woman ever to compete on the pro tour in 1963. #BlackHistory #AltheaGibson #TheJohnShippen #TJSWomensInvitational #GrandRapids #Golf #BlackGolf #ForetheCulture #BlackExcellence #BlackGirlMagic
