The only sure bet at Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland International Raceway was that all sure bets were losing bets.
Sheldon Creed seemed on his way to a comfortable win, dominating the first two-thirds of the race. Then with four laps remaining, Justin Allgaier had a massive lead because of a pileup behind him.
The winner? Cole Custer, who darted to the lead from sixth during a restart with two laps remaining, then held off Allgaier to win his first 2023 Xfinity race.
Custer, driving the No. 00 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing, beat Allgaier by 0.142 of a second to win the 147.75-mile, 75-lap race. Sam Mayer rallied to take third. Creed, the polesitter and leader of 47 laps, finished seventh.
Xfinity series leader John Hunter Nemechek, who briefly led after punting Creed off the course, later found himself in the grass thanks to Creed, and finished 10th.
