By high school, standalone social and emotional learning (SEL) lessons are rare, but with rising rates of teen anxiety, depression, and suicide, it’s clear we need to do more to support the mental health of adolescents. ⁣ ⁣ “We assume kids don’t know how to add fractions, so we teach them. Why do we assume they know how to self-regulate? Why do we assume they know how to raise their base level of happiness?” says former high school teacher Roni Habib, who, after one of his students died by suicide, created a Positive Psychology class to teach high schoolers important SEL skills. ⁣ ⁣ Habib suggests four practices designed to boost student and teacher well-being:⁣ ⁣ • Redesign the beginning of class: Start with two minutes of journaling about things students are grateful for and then ask students to share one thing with the class.
