Trailblazers like Jason Collins are so important for the future of queer folks in sports. Thank you, Jason! 🙌🏀🏳️‍🌈⁣ •⁣⁣ Back in 2013, NBA center Jason Collins became the first male athlete to publicly announce that he was gay while still active in an American professional sport. 💪⁣ •⁣ While there is still a lingering perception that male athletes are slower to accept the idea of gay players than their female counterparts, athletes like Collins, and more recently NFLer Carl Nassib coming out, have propelled acceptance forward, and we hope that trend continues for years (and seasons) to come. 🙌⁣ •⁣ The GIST is continuing to highlight important LGBTQIA+ figures in sports this month, as well as important cultural moments in pride’s history.
