Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is the Mexican tradition that honors the memory of lost loved ones.
One woman in Pilsen, a neighborhood rich with Mexican culture, has created a massive, colorful ofrenda (or altar) in her yard. Over the years, she’s acquired more than 300 photos from the community to add to her elaborate display.
This year’s butterfly motif materialized because “supposedly Indigenous groups thought that the souls [of loved ones] return in the form of butterflies,” she told Block Club Chicago.
