More young people across the West are living through wildfires, some before they reach adolescence. Experts are just beginning to learn about the mental health impact of environmental disasters — not just on students but also teachers and parents. “What we know about the mental health effects of wildfire is still kind of limited,” said Sandi Phibbs, a public health researcher with Oregon State University. “But it seems to be the most pervasive issue.” The majority of that small, most affected population expressed signs of chronic stress, including digestive problems, headaches and difficulty sleeping. Many had symptoms aligned with post-traumatic stress disorder. Some even expressed thoughts of suicide.
