Any way the wind blows 🔵
The windiest planet in our solar system, Neptune’s wind speeds top 1,200 mph (2,000 kph), whisking clouds of frozen methane across the ice giant. Beneath the thick atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, and methane, scientists believe that there may be a super hot ocean locked inside the planet due to its extreme pressure.
Thirty times farther from the Sun than Earth, Neptune was the first planet located using math and is the only planet in the solar system not visible to the naked eye. In 1989, Voyager 2 became the first and only spacecraft to visit the ice giant, snapping this image around 4.4 million miles (7 million km) from Neptune.
Image description: Neptune appears partially visible in the blackness of space in deep blue. At the center of the planet, the Great Dark Spot, a storm the size of Earth, appears next to a bright smudge.
