Portland photographer Jay Shah recently captured bioluminescence creating a glow around Arch Rock off Oregon’s southern coast just north of Brookings. Bioluminescence can be found all over the world. It’s created by a chemical reaction within organisms such as algae, bacteria, jellyfish, fish, fireflies and even fungus. In these photos, the blue glow is due to dinoflagellates, a type of algae, being disturbed in the water. Image 1: Taken July 15, 2023 at about 10:45 p.m. Camera: Nikon D850. Lens: Rokinon 24mm F1.4.
