Portland photographer Jay Shah recently captured bioluminescence creating a glow around Arch Rock off Oregon’s southern coast just north of Brookings.
Bioluminescence can be found all over the world. It’s created by a chemical reaction within organisms such as algae, bacteria, jellyfish, fish, fireflies and even fungus. In these photos, the blue glow is due to dinoflagellates, a type of algae, being disturbed in the water.
