My favorite quote of all time doesn’t come from a novel, or a TV show – it comes from a book on writing. That I was assigned in college. As homework. Lame. But I think about this quote from William Zinsser’s “On Writing Well” every time I sit at my computer. The next line of this quote is, “Few people realize how badly they write.” Which is harsh, but true. Good writing isn’t complicated. It doesn’t make the reader think. It’s clear – it gives the reader exactly what they need, when they need it, in a way that’s easy to understand.
