On a sunny Friday afternoon, seven people gather in a conference room in Lincoln City’s Driftwood Library. They are as varied as the books nearby, but here to discuss the one thing virtually every one of us shares – death. Welcome to the Death Café, one of 16,455 Cafés in 85 countries. Crystal Meneses, facilitator of today’s café, sets the tone of the meeting.
“In Death Café, there are rules,” she begins. “And the rules are there needs to be cake because cake normalizes things. Their theory is that you’re talking about something people don’t want to talk about. But if you have a cake, it makes it OK.”
And surprisingly, it is OK. Not only OK, but also positive, even uplifting. For the next hour, these men and women, ages spanning four decades, a pastor, a retiree, a widow, a mother who lost her daughter, share their thoughts, their memories, superstitions and fears, not only as they relate to death, but also family, relationships and love.
