Those exploring the John Day Fossil Beds have a lot of incredible sights to see: the Painted Hills, Painted Cove, Cant Ranch, Blue Basin, and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center, for starters. All of those sites are found at either the Painted Hills Unit or the Sheep Rock Unit, two neighboring sections of the sprawling national monument in central Oregon. Together, the two units account for the virtually all the traffic and attention. Far fewer people make it out to Clarno. The Clarno Unit is about a 90-minute drive from either of the other two Fossil Beds areas, located down a pair of winding state highways that run through a series of small towns. For comparison, it takes about 50 minutes to drive between Painted Hills and Sheep Rock, an almost straight shot down U.S. 26. And while the Painted Hills and Sheep Rock units each feature a collection of good hikes and sights to see, Clarno has, well, Clarno.
