Chileans Commemorate 50th Anniversary Of Military Coup
September 11th marks the 50th Anniversary of a right-wing coup d’etat led by Chilean Gen. Augusto Pinochet and backed by the United States. The military coup of Sept. 11, 1973 put an end to the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende and threw the country into years of international condemnation. According to the Chilean Ministry of Justice, more than 40,000 people were victims of the military regime between 1973-1989, including those imprisoned, tortured, executed and “disappeared”. The current political polarization of the country was evident when a demonstration remembering the victims of the former military regime was disrupted by right-wing opposition. |
