Approaching a high-risk time of year for wildfires in California, the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) has collaborated with Orange County Fire Authority & California Department of Insurance to execute a live demonstration of how homeowners can mitigate the risks of ignition. The demonstration, held in Irvine, illustrated the contrast between a residence fortified against fire, boasting a substantial 5-foot clearance around its perimeter, and another dwelling lacking essential safety measures. Firefighters used blowtorches to ignite the bark chips encircling both buildings, and initiated the use of sizable fans, mimicking 10 mph wind conditions. In under half an hour, the plants surrounding the fire-resistant house continued to burn, yet the structure itself remained basically untouched thanks to the 5-foot clearance zone.
