Jefferson Parish will build its own pipeline system, separate from New Orleans, to get fresh water from the Mississippi River unaffected by the salt water intrusion.
The plan is to hire contractors to run flexible piping upriver to get safe drinking water to both sides of the river.
It has been approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and work will begin as early as next week.
"This is what we're calling a flexible waterline system, sometimes known as lay-flats in the industry, to draw in freshwater from up the river,” the Parish President said at a Friday press conference.
The project will start on the West Bank since it will be affected first.
