'Shelf Cloud Over the Sea' by
@majakraljikwx 🌊☁️ Maja took this image of a shelf cloud at around 6am, as it approached Umag, Croatia from the southwest. A shelf cloud is a low-level, wedge-shaped cloud that occurs along the leading edge of the rain-cooled air flowing out of a mature thunderstorm. As the dense, rain-cooled air within a storm’s downdraft hits the ground, it spreads out and acts like a wedge, forcing relatively warmer and moister air ahead of the storm to rise abruptly. This rising air then cools and the water vapour condenses to form the shelf cloud that we see. The passage of a shelf cloud is marked by gusty winds, a fall in temperature and rain.
