In 2008, the federal government approved the highway expansion to add a left-turn lane. The project wiped out a cluster of old-growth Douglas fir trees, destroyed an ancient altar and covered burial grounds at a sacred Indigenous site known as Ana Kwna Nchi Nchi Patat, or the “Place of Big Big Trees.”
