Did you know Red Cross volunteers were part of a Braille program that helped transcribe Red Cross resources for visually impaired service members and children?
Stored in our archives is this Braille typewriter used by volunteers to translate Junior Red Cross newsletters into Braille books. They would distribute these newsletters to over 90 schools for visually impaired students across the country and abroad.
Volunteers also helped visually impaired service members acclimate to civilian life after the war by teaching them how to read Braille.
After 1941, the Red Cross Braille program transitioned under the direction of the Library of Congress, where they used Red Cross chapter offices and volunteers to continue the service.
