It's
#ASUHomecoming week, and we're diving deep into the ASU archives! Did you know there is a long line of history behind ASU’s beloved mascots? 🔱
🦉 ASU’s first mascot was an owl.
📚 ASU, originally named The Tempe Normal School, renamed mascots as the “Normals” circa 1890.
🐶 The mascot was later changed to a bulldog in the early 1900’s. Bulldog mascots were common among colleges, and university boosters worried the team name didn’t stand out.
😈 Then, on a clear, sunny day in 1946, Arizona State College track coach Donn Kinzle was on an early morning run along the Salt River bed. A dust devil materialized, swirling and dancing above the sand and rock. At that instant, the idea of the Sun Devil was born!
🔱 Sparky’s first appearance in a game was in 1951, wearing a satin jumpsuit with a long tail and carrying a pitchfork. He may be one of the earliest costumed sports mascots.
