Gun violence has torn apart our communities, both locally in Washington, DC, and across our HBCU family. As the most civic-minded basketball program in the country, we couldn’t stand by and watch this scourge of violence engulf our neighborhoods.
At the start of this school year, our very own Howard University campus was shaken by a violent attack during move-in week, a time meant for celebration. Sadly, this violence isn’t isolated to our campus. Washington, DC has seen 233 homicides this year, on track for its highest rate since the 1980s.
Our extended HBCU family has also felt the pain, with Homecoming celebrations at Morgan State, Jackson State, Bowie State, Tuskegee, and others disrupted by gun violence. Let’s pray this list stops here.
Head Coach Kenneth Blakeney puts it best: “As Black people in America, the biggest victory we can have every day is our survival - making it home in one piece.”
