In 2005, Markelle Taylor was incarcerated with a life sentence at the San Quentin State Prison. In 2023, after earning his release, markellethegazelle ran the TCS New York City Marathon.
While behind bars, he joined the 1000 Mile Club, the prison’s long distance running club.
The newly released documentary “26.2 to Life: The San Quentin Prison Marathon” shares how running helped Markelle and others reshape their perspective and find redemption one step at a time.
Today, Markelle pays his lessons forward by mentoring new runners within the program.
“The coaches did this for me and so I want to help them give back to those guys who still need the support and help. You just continue to take one day at a time – one foot forward and eventually from short term goals to long term goals, you can accomplish anything.”
