On Nov. 16, the City of Tigard Public Works posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that there had been a cougar spotted at Cook Park. Tigard residents were warned to “be aware of your surroundings and leash up your dogs.”
Dramatic as all this sounded, on Friday morning, ODFW took to its own X account to pour cold water on the cougar brouhaha. The agency posted that the supposed cougar was actually a house cat.
“This happens more than you think,” the ODFW post said, and included a link to a 2017 video of a TV reporter in Mississippi excitedly informing viewers that the feline chilling in a field behind him was not, as someone had reported, a cougar, but a calm-looking house cat.
