Portland Public School students are as many as six days short of the state’s required instructional time, after missing 11 days of class due to a historic teacher strike. The union and district are still ironing out the details of a contract to end the teacher walkout. As they do so, they face the question of what, exactly, the rest of the school calendar will look like. School district negotiators proposed Monday that unionized educators allow students to make up all 11 missed instructional days by canceling the first week of winter break, extending the school year further into June and scheduling instruction on several days that had previously been planned as school holidays or teacher work days. The Portland Association of Teachers has not yet published a back-to-school proposal or finished negotiations with the district over that point, but a union spokesperson said that it also wants students to recover lost days.
