What's scarier than taxes? Having to learn about them as an adult we'd say. So why not take the opportunity this Halloween to teach your kids about taxes? In this "lesson" you get to be HMRC and basically get some of your kids' stash of sweets and here's how: Step 1: Evaluate the stash of sweets and point out how their night of “work” has produced good consequences. A bit like when you go out to work, your actions get rewarded. Step 2: Time to talk tax! Choose a sweet (make it a decent one, not the parma violets!), and explain that when you earn money some of that money goes to the government as a tax. Explain what taxes are used for - use some specific examples that your child can relate to - school, libraries, parks, etc. Step 3: Now it’s time to deliver the bad news. Tonight, you are the government and your child is the taxpayer.
