His name was Shane. It’s a sad day for music fans everywhere as Pogues frontman and songwriter Shane MacGowan, has passed away. Known for hits like “Fairytale of New York,” and “Dirty old Town.” The Pogues had a style and a flare of their own. Born in Kent, he immersed himself in folk and contemporary music. In the 1970s, he was an influential part of London’s punk scene, where he formed The Nipple Erectors, prior to co-founding The Pogues with Jem Finer and Spider Stacey. The band’s iconic hit, “Fairytale of New York,” was the result of a 1987 Christmas bet. The band said there was no way Shane could write a Christmas song. They believed he just didn’t have it in him.
