When it debuted in 1996 in Florida, the Terminator 2: 3D attraction was a pioneering achievement. By 1999, Universal Studios Hollywood unveiled a new, purpose-built venue for the attraction. This included a spacious preshow area, where Kimberley Duncan introduces guests to the Miles Bennet Dyson Memorial Auditorium for a defense technology presentation. The main feature is a vast, advanced theater, equipped with three large wrap-around 3D screens and a stage. This setup, blending live actors with a 12-minute film worth $60 million (noted as the most expensive film per minute), creates an unparalleled experience among theme park shows.
The space for the T2: 3D show, which closed on December 31, 2012 and was later converted for Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, was originally constructed over the Frankenstein parking area, previously known as the Laramie parking structure. Prior to 1999, an outdoor stage occupied this location.
