Maggie set out to solve a sustainability problem in the beer brewing industry through her textile research. Because she pursued opportunities available to her with hard work and passion, she has been identified internationally within the textile world. Maggie Zee (maggie_zee) is a University of Idaho alum who earned a B.S. in Apparels, Textiles, and Design and later an M.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences. Maggie began research on whether hops byproducts could be used as viable textiles for clothing in her undergraduate program. The fibrous material, though similar to hemp, has not been widely used within the textile industry. When approached by hops producers Yakima Chief Hops (yakimachief) at a Career Fair in 2019, there sparked a research endeavor that would follow her into a master’s program and would later allow her to be recognized at an industry wide American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (aatcc_) convention.
