Hell Freezes Over. Last night was supposed to be a coronation moment for the best team in the league. Not to paraphrase another religious billboard, but it’d show us that someday the last could actually be first. It was nothing short of a miracle after 2020 and 2021 saw Cincy finish at the very bottom of the standings, and now they were mere minutes away from making MLS Cup. But there’d be no celebrations in Cincy last night. The Supporters’ Shield winners committed the biggest sin by not closing out the game, and Columbus condemned them to a fate worse than death. Faces around the ground slowly turned from jubilation to petrified fear as Columbus pulled one back, leveled the score, and ultimately placed the final dagger. 3-2 in the end. It’s one of those comebacks that will live on in league history and will mark a generation of fans from either team. For the Crew, the celebrations are well earned.
