🗣️GOOD ECO NEWS: The Siekopai Nation’s claim over Pë’këya, a biodiverse territory in northeast Ecuador located on the border between the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador and Peru, was finally recognized after 80 years. The Siekopai were displaced from their land during the Peru-Ecuador war in the 1940s. When asked about this victory, Mayra Piaguaje, Vice-President of the Siekopai Nation stated, “Throughout this case, we stood united as one nation – leaders, elders, and youth. This struggle has strengthened our culture. I feel proud to have recovered our territory for future generations. Our tears were not vain.”
This win marks the first time that the Ecuadorian government delivered a land title to an Indigenous community whose ancestral territory is found in a protected area and sets a positive precedent of all Indigenous Peoples around the world fighting to reclaim and protect their ancestral homelands.
