In 1937, Auburn traveled to Havanna, Cuba to partake in the first bowl game in program history. The game against Villanova was also the first game pitting two American college football teams played outside of the United States.⠀

The football game was part of the Cuban Christmas Sports Festival, an event organized by the Cuban government to showcase the Cuban culture, tourism, and products available for sale.⠀

The timing couldn't have been worse. Just two days before the festival was to begin, Cuba's previous president was overthrown by Fulgencio Batista. Batista would be overthrown nearly a quarter-century later by Fidel Castro.⠀

The game itself nearly didn't happen either. Batista was upset that the programs didn't feature his photograph, but the program was quickly reprinted to fix the issue. Armed guards were located around the perimeter of the stadium in fear of a counter-revolt taking place. Reports also state that gunfire could be heard during the game.⠀
